Handwritten on the reverse "Joyce's and my great friend Johnny Mee with his crew. Johnny is centre standing. The crew were lost on their 13th Berlin trip. I saw Johnny in London that afternoon when on my way to Swansea to play for the N.Z. Services team against South Wales. | David Bain Navigator. | Dave Luxton Bomb Aimer."
As this crew is in front of a Stirling, this places the photo at RAF Station Oakington; the squadron converted to Lancasters in late 1943. The three mentioned above are the three RNZAF in this crew. All were lost on the night of 24-25 March 1944.

All but the pilot (centre) were killed in May 1944 when they were shot down over France. The New Zealanders in the crew are Warrant Officer Alan Spiers (survived)(centre), Flight Sergeant Johnny Clift (killed)(second from right), Flying Officer Jack Wain (killed)(far right).
